If you're passionate about performance cars, we probably don't have to tell you about the 2023 Honda Civic Type R. This hot hatch has always been popular with a certain crowd, and many of us here at Heritage Honda Westminster were excited to see it come back for the new model year.

In the past we've talked to some customers that have been curious about the origin of its name. What does “Type R” mean anyway? We’ve got the answer to that, plus more about the origins of this high-performance Honda model.

What Does Type R Stand For?

The “R” in Type R simply stands for “racing.” This is because Type R vehicles are meant to pay tribute to the Honda brand's first winning F1 car. The badges are even red so that they can match that classic race car aesthetic.

The Type R nameplate has been used on other models in the past, but now it's mostly reserved for this more powerful version of the Honda Civic hatchback. The Honda Civic Type R wasn't available last year, but it's back for 2023 and ready to impress.

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R

This year's model comes equipped with a more powerful turbo engine that ups the output to 315 horsepower. It also offers an improved six-speed manual transmission, and we know that's a necessity for most performance car lovers.

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R offers four different driving modes, including Sport and Comfort modes, and the dual-axis front suspension helps this hatchback deliver more precise performance. This year's model has also been designed to be the most aerodynamic one yet.
